Rihaan Patel is an aspiring film maker, who has made several short films and has won several awards. He is based at Ahmedabad, India. A specialist of VFX – aka Visual Effects – he is dedicated to bring more of his talent in form of short films and documentaries. SpeakBindas does interview him, where he discusses some of the interesting elements related to filed he is creatively dedicated to. Read on.

Q.: Rihaan, What inspired you towards the field cinema?

Ans.: My ideas come with images and sounds. For me, cinema is the most appropriate medium to communicate. I find pleasure in creativity so cinema became a way of my life.

Q.: On your Youtube channel, I have seen some of the amazing clips where you have demonstrated the use of VFX, for instance one where you show a person walking on a foreign road which infact is shot in India. My question to you is that, according to you what is the future prospective for a VFX specialist in India and abroad? Should youth be interested in this arena, can they have a good career too in addition to satisfying the creativity? What are the options that you see for an enthusiast person interested in a career in VFX. Please elaborate details on this.

Ans.: Visual Effect became need of film industry. Many things are physically impossible to shoot on film set. So in that scenario, VFX people are hired to fake it in such a way that it looks real. VFX work should never be visible on screen. VFX known as an invisible art. VFX people are in demand whether they are in India or abroad. Now days filmmakers are becoming more quality conscious. In Indian film industry, VFX is employed in films like Ra.One, Robot, Singham, Paheli, 3 Idiot. So day-by-day, we need more VFX professionals to fulfill the need. Ex.. 10 second long shot can take up to 15 days to complete. So just think how slowly the process is? What would happen to 2-hours of feature film? Avatar took 10 year to complete. If somebody is creative and want to become VFX artist then he/she should go for vfx composting, layout artist, color correction etc. But for start, knowledge of cinema is very important. They should know that how final shot should look like..

Q.: There is one interesting thing that those friends would like to know who are good with story-telling, concept making but fail at putting it in form of a visual format, i.e. a short film. Based on your experiences so far, can you give some practical guideline which can help them bridge the gap between ‘thinking it’ and ‘doing it’?

Ans.: Thinking it and Doing it.. There is one gap between them called Communication Gap. Story-writer write down the story in linier format. Screenplay writer writes for Screen. Director has a vision of that screenplay and he discusses it with actors, cinematographer, art director, and costumer. But here, form of discussion is very important. It should not verbal but visual. Film is by design not by chance. Every decision should have artistic and technical justification, for that, exposure of cinema is important. Filmmaker should watch all genre of film whether he/she like it or dislike it, for their own knowledge.

Director should share his idea with storyboarding and concept art. This is called pre-visualization. It helps other to understand his vision easily. Filmmaking is just not shooting. Filmmaking is divided into three major parts – Pre Production, production and Post-production. Each of them is part of FILMMAKING, which should not be underestimated. If any part is weak then make it stronger.

Q.: These days, film making is just another business. I am talking about full length films, where we know that films are made in such a way that it should be liked by the majority of people – popular star cast, songs, beautiful locations, story etc.. And, we also see that some of the most talented films do not even reach to people due to lack of finance needed for publicity. So money is important, even to distribute the creativity. In such a time, can you discuss the potential of earning money through a short film?

Ans.: If somebody know complete workflow of short film making then they can earn money by doing marketing videos, Television commercials, internet videos, live events. Doing freelance writing, directing, editing, cinematography, production manager are add-ons in part of earning.

Q.: Cinema is an art. And for every artist, his creation is the return. How has been your experience of making short films, from starting to so far?

Ans.: Process of short film making taught me everything. How to work in limited resources. I had to work in limited fund provided by parents. So I could not afford expensive camera, trolley, crane, lights. Everything that I accomplished was being in limited resource and fund. It was difficult. So I made my own trolley and crane. I used that trolley in Dust of Orphan. After getting award for ‘Dust of Orphan’ my father gave me extra fund to hire professional Crane and set designing unit. With help from him, I made The Burial of Daughters. I won awards and recognition for that film. I spent lot of time behind short filmmaking and watching movies. I hardly gave time for social life. Film became my world.

In ‘Shreemad Bhagvat Geeta’ Lord Krishna has said “Keep doing ‘Karma’, don’t expect result’. This is what I did; I kept sharpening my skills for filmmaking.

Q.: So far, I have watched your three short films, viz Dust of Orphan, The Burial of Daughters, and Champal. I must say that, you can represent the human values very well in form of visual treatment. Like in Dust of Orphan, a story of an orphan girl is delivered, in The Burial of Daughters, depiction of India’s one of the shameful mindsets is presented while in Champal – it’s about poverty. Is there any reason behind, particularly choosing the subjects with social message & sadness?

Ans.: Social reformation is the reason behind selecting such a concept. I didn’t feel good about what happened with orphan girl in ‘Dust of Orphan’, girl child in ‘The Burial of Daughters’ and consequences of greediness in ‘Champal’. All those things dazzled me and made me to think. My preference is to work on genre like Epic, Fantasy, Adventure, War, and Romantic Drama.

Q.: Are you inspired by any personalities from the Cinema filed?

I’m influenced by film personalities like Christopher Nolan, Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg, Ashutosh Gowariker, Ridley Scott, Peter Jackson & Michale Bay.

Q.: Which are your favorite films?

Godfather Trilogy, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Inception, Schindler’s List, Lagaan, Forrest Gump, Transformers, Kingdom of Heaven.

Q.: What are your future projects?

Ans.: Currently I’m doing research for screenplay of adventure film. Along with it, I’m supervising VFX for one feature film. And I’m involved with various projects of motion graphics and visual effects with my company New Age Cinema.

As per your view, who do you think Shubham Choudhary is?

Just another guy, who probably has too much to say to the world. Is totally mad! Who does what his heart says and who lives every moment to the fullest.

Your blog is getting quite big hits and your articles are also being published on reputed sites, so was this talent of writing you had right from the beginning or you figured this out lately? And when did you realize that you should go for it?

Ans:   If we talk about the start, well I used to take deep interest even in the articles I wrote in my English exams in the eighth grade. But I never thought I would write on any bigger level. It all started when I joined TheWittyShit.com as a wit-maker, and then around six months back, inspired by some prolific blogger friends and having a lot of time to do nothing, I started my blog ABugInMyMind. I never publicized it, but once people started noticing it, just like everyone else, I also started loving the appreciation and then the things just kept getting better.

If you had to pick one of your favourite article/poem, out of the hundreds you wrote, which one would that be? And why?

Ans: Without being idealistic, I guess the “5 questions guys can’t answer” was one post that I enjoyed the most while writing. In poems, I would choose “I miss my childhood”. Both relate to me a lot, in different ways obviously.

Everyone gets inspired from something/someone, what is your inspiration?

Ans: I think everyone in the world has something to inspire you. I learned how to smile while you struggle from my father, how to forgive from my mother, optimism from my sister. Among the general names everyone takes, Sachin Tendulkar is the person from whom I practically learnt actions speak louder than words.

One of your very popular quotes on a website was “if your to be wife mistook you for a waiter, how would you reply?” and you posted that “no problem ma’am saari umar toh aap hi ko order dene hain”
so do you really believe like that or was it 2 get some girl likes?

Ans: I guess girls would be reading this interview so yes I do think that. Ha ha, actually yes, I think in a relationship, though everyone says equality must be there, but at the end of the day, girls are the leaders

Among guys of your age having a crush, dating etc. Are quite common, so is there someone whom you would like to propose this valentine? And only yes or no won’t work.

Ans: You had to say the last line didn’t you? Yes, crushes are common, I am lucky to have had a few myself, and luckier to have overcome them. But I have never been in a relationship. And it’s not that I am waiting for that perfect person, but maybe I am not that perfect person myself.

You didn’t answer about the valentine?

Ans: oh you noticed that! No. I would rather celebrate the teddy and chocolate day before that.

So are you inspired from some TV character, I see a lot of Barney Stinson ideology in your answers!?

Ans: A lot. Barney Stinson and Chandler Bing, two characters that have really changed the way I think. Being inspired from Chandler, I don’t mind when someone criticizes or insults me, being inspired from Barney, I can easily revert back in the same way to that person without him knowing that.

Moving to a different topic, with all these young authors gaining popularity these hands, you also plan to go on something like that or will you b confining yourself 2 articles/blogs only?

Ans: Confining myself, no way. I am nothing right now with like a thousand better writers than me in my own circle. In fact, I am presently working on a story which someday I would like to see as a novel, nothing planned though.

You are working with a start-up called TalEx, what is it about n what’s your role in it?

Ans: TalEx, it’s a start up by my friends at IIT Hyderabad later on joined by me. We basically connect the young talents to the people who need them. If you’re a photographer, writer, designer or anything else, and don’t know where to showcase your talent, TalEx is there for you. I am currently managing the operations part of the company, with many of the big names like Spykar and Snapdeal associated with us.

So how does it feel to be an entrepreneur, an engineer, a writer, a blogger, an aspiring RJ and so much more? Isn’t it a little too much even for a multi tasker?

Ans: How can I say anything else but awesome! And yes, it is too much, and I am paying for it in terms of my semester results. But if I hadn’t done any of it, then even being a class topper wouldn’t have made me happy. Believe me, I used to study when I was in tenth

Apart from writing what do you like to do in your leisure time?

Ans: leisure time, what is that? Just kidding, I hardly get time to do anything else, but when I do, I dance like crazies. I am not a dancer, but generally it’s only me, my room and super loud speakers.

So do you see those bits of fame coming your way? Any fan mails you would like to tell us about?

Ans: Frankly, I am still wondering if I really deserved this interview. I have just started my journey as any of the things you mentioned above, but fan mails, yes a few. Although I can tell you about the first hate comment on my blog which said “Stupid post” and a 30 lines after that. I actually felt good, because that was the first time I actually came to know how it feels to be criticized!

That joke is titled as “Jaamin Jadta Nathi”. One day while surfing the television, I came across a jokes program where I saw Gulabdan Barot for the very first time. And as he started sharing the amazing joke about Jaamin Jadta Nathi, I couldn’t move from where I was sitting. It was full of humor.

Gulabdan Barot is of course a popular humorist, but his creativity is spread in other fields too such as writing, history and poems. One of the said best thing about him is that his most of the creations are new and self-developed. He find humor from routine daily life.

Honestly speaking, when I went to interview him, I had no much idea about other parts of his personality, i.e. he is a very good poet. Couple of poems he has recited during this interview, which indeed are full of wisdom. Some of them are full of humor too. His poem about Rajkot is very much appreciated by other humorists too.

One of the things that I found very interesting about him is that, he is very much good with meanings of words which are spoken in routine language, but most of the people are not aware about its meaning. He also shared couple of stories where he mentioned the reasons behind blind-mythological rituals that we follow, without any understanding about it, such as he talks about why do people offer oil to lord Hanuman? Rather, his message was that we shouldn’t be doing it. He has given clear-cut explanation about the same too.

He is also writing a book where in which he talks about the sadhu jagat – saint realm combined with information about different religions and hindu sects. In this interview, you will get to hear him giving never before heard information about our own culture and religion. His study of history and religion is indeed appreciable.

Being an artist, a humorist, he has visited some foreign countries too. I was inspired to ask him about how has been the response to his program by Guajratis living in other countries. He shares his feelings about the same in this interview.

Being a retired forest officer, he is a wildlife lover.

How were you introduced to the world of Handwriting Analysis and Grapho-Therapy?

Change is the only thing constant in life Devang and I always felt unsatisfied when I looked at my writing. I wanted o change it and to do that kept copying anyone’s handwriting that caught my fancy (which is very harmful as you also incorporate their personality traits in your writing.) As they say, if you want something bad enough, it will appear eventually and that’s what happened in my case. I was attending a seminar on “Empowering Yourself” when one of the participants in my group started speaking about Handwriting Analysis. I made further investigation and joined Bart Baggetts Certification course. I have read extensively on this topic so far and have books by many authors.

What is the real science behind Handwriting?

Handwriting is not handwriting at all Devang!

It is Mind Writing!! It has the ability to dig out your deepest emotions, strengths, weaknesses, likes, dislikes and much more. The sheet of paper is the world of the writer and they end up writing their autobiography on it every time the pen strikes the paper. The slant, margins, pressure, strokes all revel something to the Graphologist. For instance 30 children are thought in a class by one teacher to write in a particular manner, however when you go and check, all their writings will be different, why? Because all their personalities are different and that will show up in their writing as well.

How can people change their life for a better meaning through Grapho-therapy? In other words, for whom the handwriting analysis is required for what purpose?

Grapho -therapy means to change your handwriting scientifically in order to change your personality. This can happen because we have neuro muscular movements in our mind and every time we write a new pathway is being formed. Hence to cut the long story short, imagine that you are traveling in a train from Mumbai to Rajkot, after finishing your job, the same train will bring you back to your Original destination (Mumbai) right, and similarly the hand is connected to your brain and your brain to your hand. Changing your writing in the scientific manner will have an impact on your sub-conscious mind and when you keep on repeating these traits it will change your personality as well.

Tell us about your so far experiences with people whose handwritings you have analyzed.

I have been in this field for the past 5 years Devang and as soon as people hear I am a Handwriting Analyst, they want to get themselves analyzed. I have found that people who we may know for many years, will not be that close, until I give them an analysis and suddenly I turn into their friend and guide. It is always a good feeling when people remember you and come back to know more. I have many such incidents; one which I remember is with my doctor who I had been seeing for 2 years and very professional and intelligent lady. But our relationship changed from doctor-patient as soon as I gave her an analysis. Such is the power of this wonderful life changing science.

How sure is your technique of handwriting analysis? I mean, what is the ratio of your analysis being true about a person when you observe his/her handwritings?

Every handwriting is unique Devang, the same way as every figure print is. The only person who can tell you how accurate you are is the person whose handwriting you are analyzing. After finishing the analysis I ask for the feedback. It’s the bread, butter and jam of my business because it helps me be on the right track as well. As far as analyzing handwriting is considered I look at all the aspects of handwriting, macro, micro, space, and signature and so on.

Any other special message you would like to share with the readers of SpeakBindas?

I am very happy to be able to share what I know with the avid readers of Speak Bindas. Handwriting analysis is a very interesting topic, and can be learned or practiced by big and small, man or woman. Janak Kotak is the mayor of Rajkot city. He is popularly known as Janak Raja, for his humanitarian approach for the societal work. He has successfully been elected since last many elections. When we went to interview him at his office at Rajkot Municipal Corporation, we were indeed inspired by his way of solving people’s problems. He was so kind in understanding even a small problem and providing the most possible solution to it, at the right time. We also observed the hope on the faces of people who had come there seeking solution.

About politicians, it is said that they are master of words, that they can speak in a sweet language despite their heart is bitter and cheater. But in the case of Janak Kotak, it is not so. I mean, he indeed is master of words but his heart too is pure, and it reflects in his actions. And I guess, that’s why he is so popular among the common people of the city.

Jimmy Advani is Founder, President of Mangal Murti Social Group, Rajkot. This organization is successfully organizing Ganesh Mahotsav for last twelve years in the city of Rajkot. For last two years, the celebration has been widely known as “Trikonbag Ka Raja“, meaning The King of Trikonbag. Trikonbag is a most famous landmark of Rajkot. It’s a popular circle rather. And as Ganesh Mahotsav is organized at this place by Jimmy Advani, it has been known so.

Jimmy Advani is also the President of Shiv Sena for the Saurashtra region. He has taken active part in many of religious as well as people related activities.

In this interview, we have talked with him more about the Ganesh Mahotsav, which this year will be celebrated from September 1 to September 11. It’s an eleven day long religious ceremony. Generally, people do host Lord Ganesha at their home, in-group in a residence area and in temples, and at evening they worship him by offering a group prayer, along with Prasadam at the end. And this lasts for eleven days, and then they carry the statue of Lord Ganesha with a ceremony to near by ocean or a river and destruct it there.

But Trikonbag Ka Raja is celebrated with difference & uniqueness, with inclusion of many other interesting activities such as religious, medical, social etc. For example, different kinds of religious programs are also organized, like ISKCON-Dhun Bhajan, Brahmakumari Pravachan, Shri Swaminarayan Bhagvan-Dhun Bhajan, Shiv Mahima etc. where as social activities for the interest of public like Dayro, Lok Sahitya, Hasayaro, Orchestra show with patriotic songs, Dandiyaras etc., then social medical activities like Blood donation camp, medical check-up camp, Thalassaemia check-up camp, Tobacco de-addiction camp, AIDS Awareness program etc., and also activities like drawing competition for kids, Shlok reciting competition for school going kids, dance demonstration etc.

The preparation for this celebration begins from two months in advance, as it requires management of many kinds, such as collection of sponsorship, finalizing types of activities, arrangements of stage, lighting, sound etc., distributing invitations and many other related responsibilities.

Those who’re into travelling places, would love reading this interview of Pratiksha Thanki. She basically hails from Gujarat but now residing in Germany. She’s a journalist, a writer and a frequent traveler. In this interview, she shines more light on these parts of her experiences. The best part I myself liked reading about this interview is the lines when she said “….It may sound cheesy but the process of discovering the world helps you discover yourself.” How true it is!

Q.: What evokes you to write?

Ans.: Inspiration to write comes from different corners. It could come from a good book, a historical castle, painting, unique software or simply being surrounded by natural beauty. It will be safe to say that everything evokes me to write. I grew up in a very literary environment at home so I end up converting my surroundings and circumstances into inspiration.

Q.: Your roots are in Gujarat. At present you live in Germany. You have also written a book in Gujarati language named “Europe Ma Harta Farta” – Europe through the eyes of a Gujarati – Gurjar Prakashan [A travel book]. Do tell us about your connection to traveling in different parts of the world.

Ans.: I grew up in Gujarat and have been working for Gujarati print media since I was in college. Later on I also ended up working as a Feature Writer and Correspondent for The Times of India in Ahmedabad for a couple of years. My husband went to Germany on a work project then and I decided to pursue my full-time PhD around that time. This gave us a base in Europe and the continent sort of opened up to us.

I decided to grab the opportunity to travel as much as possible while we’re based here and that has led me to travel to countries like France, Italy, Austria, Greece, Belgium, Netherlands, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Portugal, Czech Republic, Spain so far and a lot more is still in the pipeline. Obviously this also led me to a lot of travel writing.

Q.: You have also written another book named Web@home. What’s next from your writing bucket?

Ans. Web@home came in very early in my career while I was still doing my Masters, dabbling in new technologies and finding my niche. Web@home started as a newspaper column in the Gujarati daily Jansatta-Loksatta in 1999, introducing people to the Internet. I wanted to bring this fascinating technology to my Gujarati readers. For TOI, I’ve written hundreds of articles and interviews on every possible feature subject. Later on the travel experiences and boat loads of reading made me realize I do not need to tie myself down to a single genre. Now I am in the process of writing fiction as well as non-fiction pieces in English and Gujarati.

Q.: What is the best part of traveling to different places of the world?

Ans.: Traveling changes your perspective to life. The uncertainties of constantly being on the move prepare you for a variety of experiences, food, languages, people and landscape. Real travel experiences free you from a lot of cultural prejudices. It may sound cheesy but the process of discovering the world helps you discover yourself.

Q.: Your also blog at http://www.pratikshathanki.com/ (Never lost for words…). How does blogging act as a creative part in your writing journey?

Ans.: Blogging means freedom to experiment with forms. I’ve been blog-hopping since 2003 on different platforms like Blogspot, Yahoo 360, WordPress, Rediff blogs, O3 Indiatimes blogs and more. I’m on my own domain since three years now. When writing for a magazine, newspaper or preparing a book means you’ve certain word, subject and format constraints. My blog is a personal space where I’m not bound to write in any particular way. This way, many blog posts also end up as warm up exercises for serious writing.

Q.: Something special you would like to share with SpeakBindas, which you have not talked about yet?

Ans.: I’m pretty much hooked to Audio Books at present. Past decade has changed a lot, from the way we read, use technology to the way we travel. I wish I could read a lot more than I can at present. Why just me, I wish everyone in the world can read a lot more. After all, you can travel the whole world through words if you pick up the right book. Another thing on my mind at present is to find a balance between the pulp books and the literati.

Dr. Samir Prajapati, M.D.(Medicine) is a consultant intensivist and critical care physician, working at Milestone Multi Speciality Hospital, Rajkot. He is specialist in Critical Care, ICU & Ventilator Management, Complicated & High Risk Patient and Infective illness. He has earlier worked as Chief intensivist & visiting intensivist at Wokhardt Hospital, Rajkot as well he worked as ICU Physician at Lilawati Hospital, Mumbai, Stearling Hospital, Ahmedabad and Shrey Hospital, Ahmedabad.

He is very calm and cool in personality. Seemed detailed about his expertise. In this interview, we discussed about the approach of a doctor towards patients. Generally, now as the professionalism has increased, we also get to see doctors being more professional and less with human approach with their patients. Dr. Prajapati gave very intensive answers about this discussion.

We also talked about his specialty, i.e. intensivity. His specialty is all about performing the treatment very precisely, as there is always the limit of time in critical situations. He elaborated the entire process in a detailed manner.

Ashok Kadvani is the creator of KarmYogi Mart Ltd. based at G.I.D.C. Metoda, Rajkot. The basic concept of this initiative is to synergize the energy of youth and like minded people under one roof. To initiate this movement, he started with the shopping mall, a mall with great discount on routine life needs. The earning from this mall gets utilized in the various programs of KarmYogi Parivar. This is the basic idea behind this.

On 15/08/2010, fifteen friends go to gether to give a shape to their such thinking and thus was created KarmYogi Mart Ltd. The reason behind opening up mart in Metoda G.I.D.C area is that, as there is a good population of lower middle class families who are working in different industries, discount in various routine things becomes very useful for them. The mall was started with two things in store: Potato and Onion. And as of today, there are around 1600 different items being sold the mall.

There is a very beautiful theory behind choosing the name KarmYogi only. Ashokbhai says “KarmYogi consists of two different words, i.e. Karm and Yogi. Karm is what we do and Yogi is the one who does it with devotion. So here, KarmYogi different from the routine employee. What we do, we should do it with devotion.”

Anyone who shares the vision of KarmYogi is join this initiative.

In personal life, Ashok Kadvani practises meditation and it has given the inspiration to start such an initiative. There is also a very interesting part of his persona. In this era of internet, his communication is also in form of hand-written letters. To whomever he meets, he sends a letter with the feelings that he felt during the meeting.
