Video Interview of Sharad Sharma
Excerpt of the Interview
Adhirajsinh Jadeja: Welcome to SpeakBindas. What was your inspiration to join the drama field?
- Sharad Sharma: From my school days, I used to participate in stage shows. I acted first time in a Gujarati play during the early days of television in INDIA in 1972. Co-directors of this play were also playing roles in it. They liked my work and offered me chance to play in a drama. And day by day, the journey progressed.
- Then came, private television channels. I worked in them. I have also acted in Gujarati films, though few times only. Recently I acted in a Gujarati movie ‘Adla Badli’ where in which I play the role of a ‘Yama’. The film is comedy in its nature. After the interval part, my characters is in focus.
Adhirajsinh Jadeja: It is said that, acting in films and serials become easy for a drama artist, because they have the LIVE performance experience. What you have to say about it?
- Sharad Sharma: Fields of drama, films and televisions serials totally differ from each other. In a drama, your entire body is visible and hence your body language should be adequate. Movements of your hands and legs should be according to you the mood of your performance. Where as in films and television serials, mostly portion of your body is visible. To me, it’s like a bonding. Where as in drama, there is total freedom for performance.
Adhirajsinh Jadeja: You have worked in all mediums of acting, i.e. drama, film and television serial. What’s your opinion about the existence of drama against the other two?
- Sharad Sharma: For sure, it will sustain. Because audience love watching a live show. They love watching a live actor performing right infront of them. Hence, drama field will never shut down. If we observe the television serial field then you can see that, earlier detective theme based serials were hit, then came business rivalry theme serials preceded by family drama serials and now the reality shows. But none of them has negatively affected the drama. It is going on with its own pace.
Adhirajsinh Jadeja: From your acting experiences so far, which among acting in films and acting in serials, you liked more?
- Sharad Sharma: Drama of course. There, we get the response of audience right away. Like a good performance is recognized through audience clapping, laughing on comedy scenes, speak out ‘once more’ slogans etc. That means, we get to know how we performed.
- Where as in films, I have no idea about how my shot will be represented. And sometimes, the part or whole of your role gets cut on the editing table. Hence, compared to dramas, the response about your character in films is hard and slow to know.
Adhirajsinh Jadeja: Which are the Hindi films you’ve acted in?
- Sharad Sharma: I don’t have a big list under my name. As well, the roles that I have played are of few scenes only, not the leading roles. I have acted in Hindi films like My Friend Ganesha Part 3, Page 3, God Tussi Great Ho, Badshah, Soldier, Darrar, Pehla Nasha etc.
Adhirajsinh Jadeja: You are also known as ‘Kadar Bhai’ a character that you have played in a television serial. So, what name do you like more, Kadar Bhai or Sharad Sharma?
- Sharad Sharma: Sharad Sharma, of course! That’s true as well that character of Kadar Bhai gave me fame among some audience.

Adhirajsinh Jadeja: Would you please shed some light on your drama ‘Dikri No. 1?”
- Sharad Sharma: The theme is about a Dikri (daughter) getting married to a different family than her cast, where she finds totally different rituals. It’s about change that girls need to develop in themselves after getting married and how she manages it all.
Adhirajsinh Jadeja: Any special message to people of Rajkot and SpeakBindas readers?
- Sharad Sharma: My common message to all of them that keep appreciating dramas. Do come to watch drama as well. Not because I am playing a character in this drama I’m telling you but it is indeed a good one. You will like it.

One more suggestion. Try to comment in English only, don’t give away a single chance where you need to speak/write/read in English. That’s self training and will improve your English with the passage of time. We Gujaratis are known to be poor in English, let’s break that Ice.
Sure, keep it up
