Exclusive interview of Chetan Bhagat
Recently, he was in Rajkot, and we got a chance to have a chit chat with him with a video interview.
VIDEO OF INTERVIEW WITH CHETAN BHAGAT.
Excerpt of Interview
Adhirajsinh Jadeja: Welcome to SpeakBindas. You’ve been first time in city of Rajkot. Tell us how has been your experience with the city and its people?
- Chetan Bhagat: It feels good. Comparatively it’s a small city and I feel like welcomed. I have heard that people of Rajot live in a relax way and usually take a nap everyday from 1 to 3 PM! I think that, these should be adopted by other countries too.
Adhirajsinh Jadeja: You have studied at I.I.T. Delhi and them at I.I.M Ahmedabad for your management studies. For a management student, it’s a dream to study at I.I.M Ahmedabad. How has been the learning experience there?
- Chetan Bhagat: When I wasn’t an established author, I went for M.B.A. for better career prospective. I really enjoyed the experience of studying in such a well know institute. Marketing and Finance that I learnt from there has been really helpful to me. Even today, in my business of writing books, the same is applied.
Adhirajsinh Jadeja: While you were studying, had you set an idea to become a well known author?
- Chetan Bhagat: I had never thought that I will become a well known author. But yes, I used to write and hence planning to keep that momentum going.
Adhirajsinh Jadeja: Is there any specific reason behind having a numerical number in the title of your books, like in Five Point Someone, there is ‘Five’, and in One night @ The Call Center there is ‘One’?
- Chetan Bhagat: Ammm… it has become a trademark of Chetan Bhat now. My fans and readers too feel good having a number in the title of the book. And it’s really easy to remember the name of book that way. And that’s the reason why people can easily remember my book names.
Adhirajsinh Jadeja: From your two books namely ‘Five Point Someone’ and ‘One night @ the call center” two Hindi films are made respectively ‘3 Idiots’ and ‘Hello!’. 3 Idiots has been a blockbuster where as ‘Hello!’ has been very flop. How do you look at this scene?
- Chetan Bhagat: It happens. It’s not easy to make a Hindi film from a book written in English language. Business of films is really uncertain. Everyone has their own talent and luck. It’s mostly dependent on luck. Nobody can say in advance how the film will be when it’s totally prepared to release. It’s not like that, if a film is made based on a best seller book, it will be a hit. And that’s why I think the business of Hindi films is exciting and uncertain.
Adhirajsinh Jadeja: Say something about your latest book ‘2 States’.
- Chetan Bhagat: It’s about marriage issue of a couple, both coming from different states. People are liking the book and being discussed as well.
Adhirajsinh Jadeja: Any future plans apart from writing books?
- Chetan Bhagat: Well, I want to do something for the youth. Work for their issues. I write columns too on various issues of youth, so yeah, things of that sort are going on.
Adhirajsinh Jadeja: The present generation of youth is hard working and still struggling. What you have to say about that?
- Chetan Bhagat: Yes, that’s true that, they are really ambitious and full of willingness. But I feel that the opportunities are not equal for their ambitions.
Adhirajsinh Jadeja: For 11 years, you have worked as an investment banker in Hong Kong. Were in planning to continue it for a longer time?
- Chetan Bhagat: Well, yes. Hadn’t thought that my books will be such a hit. But because of the earning that I could generate during that phase, I feel the safety now.
Adhirajsinh Jadeja: Issues related to your rights for the movie 3 Idiots were in discussion these days. What you have to say about that?
- Chetan Bhagat: Well, issue was generated because the proper credit weren’t given to me, my book, which generally is given both at international and homely level in film making. So I raised that issue and luckily I got a huge support and it became a national issue. But now that it has been more than enough, I thought to close it down just to make sure I am not doing it to gain publicity.
Adhirajsinh Jadeja: That’s true, because the normal tone of people was that it’s your publicity stunt.
- Chetan Bhagat: Yes. But honestly, I had no idea that an issue raised by me will become the talk to nation. So far, never a writer’s voice has received these many ears! But as it became huge, I stopped it. I have talked on it only for one day. That one day was enough to shack the entire country.
Adhirajsinh Jadeja: Do you think this national news and you raising the issue made your fans happy?
- Chetan Bhagat: Yes. Infact, that was the main reason. I mean, my fans were expecting to know my views on this ‘credit’ issue. Because they had read the book and also watched the movie, they observed that the proper credits were not given to me. But that happens. It’s past now. Let’s move ahead. Let’s make another film

Nice interview Adhirajsinh. Particularly, I liked your question about having a ‘number’ in titles of his books! Chetan sounded bit of diplomatic, mostly because of the fear of not speaking something which can burn one more issue
