Excerpt of Interview

Q.: Welcome to SpeakBindas. What made you decide to choose the title “Hats off Zindagi” for your book?

Through my column in newspaper, I used to get letters from my readers and fans. Most of them belong to youth. They had various questions and doubts about Zindagi (life). From their letters I came to know that, young generation do not believe in reality, but rather talk on issues which are unreal. I felt that we all should hats off Zindagi. I was inspired by the word “Hats off” from ‘Hats off Production‘ run by J. D. Majethiya, Atish Kapadiya, and Vipul Shah, who have made a popular Gujarati film ‘Dariyachhoru(દરિયાછોરુ)’ and now making various television serials. I felt that the word ‘Hats off’ do replicate my thoughts, hence I finally arrived with the book title ‘Hats off Zindagi.’

Q.: Majority of your writings is youth oriented. Why?

We are used to hear one statement all over and is that Old is Gold. I agree with it, no issues but I also believe in one more thing and is that “New is Platinum.’ Today’s youth find it very hard to bring out their inner voice and desires. They always tend to receive heavy lectures and advises. Hence, there are very few people who write in such a language that reflects their voice.

Being a lecturer in an MBA college, I try to develop such an atmosphere where they can put their faith in me and my teachings. To do so, sometimes I do take lectures wearing Jeans and T-shirt. This makes them feel that I am one of them and I understand their thinking and feelings.

Q.: What kinds of articles do your book ‘Hats off Zindagi’ covers?

More than 35 of my articles are included in this book. Every article differs from the other. Every one of them has such a unique message for the youth which replicates their desires and ambitions or say thoughts. For example, in one of my articles I have delivered a message that “Comparison means guaranteed sadness.”

There is an interesting story about this. Once a survey was carried out in Harvard University. One of the two employees of some company was offered a salary of 75000/- with a condition that his co-worker will get 50000/-. This was the first option. In the second, first employee was offered a salary of 100000/- and his co-worker was to get 125000/-. First employee was to decide which option to chose, i.e. either go with a salary of 75000/- where his co-worker will get 50000/- or go with 100000/- where his co-worker will get a salary of 125000/-. Interestingly, he chose the first option. He thought that, 75000/- is enough for himself and he won’t go with a higher salary of 100000/- because that way his co-worker will get 125000/-.

In one of my articles, I give away a message to readers, mostly to youth that, do not take such comparative decisions. Chose what is best for you regardless of comparing it with anyone or anything.

In another article I talk on the skill of saying NO. Due to the lack of power NO, we are tend to do something that we really don’t want to. We can not say NO for something that we really don’t like doing.

I write on such routine subjects, which seem very small in our daily life but has huge importance. Sometimes to gain success, we need to concentrate on such tiny and routine stuffs rather than the giant ones.

I also believe that the only reason for unemployment is carelessness.

Q.: In our education system, let it be any excellent course such as M.B.A. or B.E, where bunch of books are taught with bunch of theories. But when students do complete these courses and put their legs in real life, they find it real hard to sustain. I mean, in theories they were taught on various skills such as “How to convince someone?”, but when it comes to reality, they fail to accomplish the same. What’s your take on this scenario? Where do we actually lack and what? Is our education system at fault or the students? Or what?

Recent movie ‘3 Idiots‘ has evoked discussions everywhere on the question that you have raised. Let it be director of 3 Idiots Rajkumar Hirani or ourselves, we would agree on one common point that bookish knowledge doesn’t become that much helpful to students when they face the real business/employment situation. I don’t mean to say that books are garbage. But in addition to that, we should ad some module too where students do get practical knowledge.

Q.: That’s true. There are also numerous heavy words to inspire students. This inspires them temporarily but then they again feel the void. What I mean to ask you is that, what really should be done to fill this void that students are facing these days?

Very good question. One of my articles has a title “Lack of Implementation (અમલનો અભાવ).” I remember that Ex-chairman of Infosys, Mr. Narayan Moorthy has once said something like “In our Infosys, if there is one reason for success then that is the zero gap between thoughts and actions.” So in most of the cases, the gap between thoughts and actions is always vast. We think a lot. We have great ambitions. But we fail to take actions.

During my lectures, I often give an example of Water-Ice-Water. When you put a bottle of water in freezer, it turns to Ice. But when you take that Ice out of freezer, in a while, it will turn into water. Likewise, what happens with my students and others is that, when we teach them something, when we share some ideas, they all become Ice, i.e. they feel like they will follow the same. But when they exit the class, they lose the touch with thoughts, i.e. they turn into water.

So what is required to solve this issue is to keep walking slowly and steadily. Dreams won’t be achieved in one day, so make your attitude ready for slow and steady process. And most importantly, they should learn to implement, execute their thoughts.

Q.: What’s your inspiration for writing?

During my educational years, I started reading articles of eminent Gujarati writer Jay Vasavada. I was highly impressed with his writing style. You can observe the impression of his writing style in my writing too, and I accept it. His subjects and themes of articles used to touch me. This is around 10 years before. So I can say that if there is someone who evoked a reader in myself then that is none other than Jay Vasavada.

Similarly, Pragjibhai Patel inspired me to write. He used to run a magazine called ‘Umiya Parivar.’ I used to stay right below his office. He offered me to write for a column in this magazine and I started writing for a column ‘Gamta no Gulal.’

My first ever column in a daily was ‘Milestone‘ in Jai Hind newspaper. I wrote it for consecutive three years and I was a student then. After completion of my graduation, due to work, I had to leave writing that column. Then again when life became steady, I started writing a new column “Striker” in another Gujarati daily Phulchhab.

So the duo of Jay Vasavada and Pragjibhai Patel are the inspirational sources for me for my reading and writing career.

Q.: It is heard that, your book ‘Hats off Zindagi’ is to be launched with gracious hands of an internationally known celebrity. Would you like to share the secret with us today?

Very true. We are inviting him on the 3rd of March, 2010 at Hemu Gadhvi Hall, Rajkot for launching of my book. He is more popular for his work than his name. He is basically a Gujarati and belongs to a small village of Khijadiya situated in Gir region. After living for 12 years in such a small village, he went out because his artistic skill was jumping in his heart. He progressed at such a great extent that, today he stands out to be a Hollywood film maker, a producer and a writer. He has directed the award winning English films such as Samsara and Valley of Flowers. His next film Buddha is to be released in 2011. His recent documentary Echo of Eco was shown at recent Copenhagen meet. His name is Pan Nalin. He is in touch with my book’s publisher Dinesh Tilva. During their conversation, he happily agreed to remain present and launch my book which I believe is indeed a matter of happiness for me and all Gujaratis.

Q.: Your book is to be released on 3rd March, 2010 but from now itself, you’re getting advance orders. Is it true?

Very true. So far, we have received an advance order of 2200 copies which I believe is a unique incident for Gujarati books publication. I believe, bliss goes to my readers. I often mention “Hats off readers” when it comes to my book.

Q.: Any special message you would like to share with your readers as well young generations through SpeakBindas?

Develop an attitude for reading stuffs of your choice because it brings understanding. Keep your inner spark alive all the time.

Update 1: March 12, 2010

Chandubhai Rathod runs a lathe machine repairing centre ‘R.C. Auto Repairing’ in Rajkot. He has studied upto 6th standard only but is quite an enthusiastic reader. Recently, Becharbhai Patel gave him the book ‘Hats off Zindagi’ for reading. Chandubhai read it and found it highly inspiring that he made all his family members read the same. He says “There was quite a sadness in the family but after reading this book, things have become full of happiness.” This is quite an original review of the book, and not a made up one with advance planning. Watch the below video where he exclusively talks in his language about the book.

From Sharad Bhimani -Hyderabad
to Mr. Jayesh, Mr. Dinesh and whole team
I have heard your interview thrice and I am proud of you for your enthusiastic approach and effort to write and publish HATS OF ZINDAGI. I believe that you may have agreeably targeted our young ones in every corner of your writing. I am also an MBA (Mktg & Fin) and working with GSFC Limited. I have mentored many young friends just like you and as per my opinion right direction at right time will only make ZINDAGI. Youngsters are much more ambitious about their future but few of them only touches to the target. my advise to young friends is “Learn to see the dreams with open eye defiantly your dreams will become the reality”. I very well know your publisher and you have clapped with precise person. I wish that you and Mr. Dinesh will keep your journey continue and many youths will make their ZINDAGI. My heartily wishes are with you and your full team who have contributed in publication of HATS OF ZINDAGI.
I am eager to read “Hats of Zindagi” and also wish to gift some ones who wish to make their ZINDAGI so please book an order for 50(FIFTY) books for me and try to forward on top most priority inform me about payment formalities. By by and best luck for THIRD event and next too. Send me more about ‘PAN LALIT’
