Vijay Mallya brings Mahatma Gandhi belongings back to India

Mahatma Gandhi

Auction of Mahatma Gandhi‘s belongings had created a huge roar in India. Gandhi’s trademark wire-rimmed glasses, a pocket watch and a metal bowl, worn leather sandals and plate were the belongings of Mahatma Gandhi that were collected and owned by California based James Otis.

The Indian Tycoon, Vijay Mallya who is chief of  UB Group who runs Kingfisher Airlines and United Breweries that owns Kingfisher beer bought Gandhi belongings for $1.8 million on Thursday. Mallya plans to donate the same to his country India for the display of his fellow Indians.
Government of India had protested this auction earlier. But still belonging items were sold by Antiquorum Auctioneers to Mallya. In a way, items have come back to home only, no matter Mallya had to pay a huge amount for the same. This is real patriotism, isn’t it?

Mahatma Gandhi being the father of nation, his belongings were considered as the heritage items. Hence Government of India also had announced their bid for the items, which was expected to be $300,000. But the son of motherland India, Vijay Mallya showed his true spirit as an Indian, and brought Gandhi Bapu back home.

Mahatma Gandhi Auctions

It is said that the plate and bowl which were included in this auction were used by Mahatma Gandhi for his last meal. This makes a great sense for every Indian, for the man they followed with their life, and who helped India receive her freedom.

His nonviolent resistance was the key that forced English rulers to remove their presence from India, giving her the freedom she deserved.

A sigh of relief is to be felt now by every Indian as the Gandhi belongings are coming back home. And as Mallya has announced his desire to donate the same to India for the display for everybody, his generosity has been reflected in a very memorable way. Government of India should really honor Mallya for his patriotism act.

Welcome back home, Bapu!

I still wonder why we do not dare to accept that we can bring everything that belonged to The Father of the Nation back except Gandhisim – the very spirit with which Bapu honoured his whole life.

    1. Rupal says:

      Well said, Ankit!

Maly should be given credit This may be his business decision but the bottomline is that we got our treasure back .Will our impotent and incompitant government learn from a businessman? We should get all our stuff from brits their occupation of our country was illegal, immoral, barbaric, nad illigitimate,we should freez all their properties and give them back only if they give our kohinoor, shivaji’s sword and many other things that they have stolen from us by covertly making that legal, from our country of more then billion people and our morethen million lawers who are ready to fight anti nationals can none of them file a case against brits??? IF usa can freez iran’s money for 30 years why we can not? why do we pay our money to them ? why we pay interest on the loans that they have given us ? Their wealth is our stolen wealth.People of INDIA think about this.

Every single common man of India will welcome this news item because every common man of India thought and thinks that Gandhji was one of him and not like a present day corrupt and impotent politician particularly from Congress who thinks he is above common man and uses Gandhiji’s name as a tool to get political appointment for his own and his families benefit. They simply cash his name for personal benefit. They are shameless and never think of Principles preached and followed by Gandhiji. It is so ironic that none of sons, grandsons or even great gransons of Gandhiji came forward for claiming such items for which nation has emotional values and also for claiming any position for personal benefits encashing Gandhiji’s name. Is it that Jawaharlal Nehru and/or Indira Gandhi and her son/grandsons/granddaughters claim franchise rights for everything belonging to Gandhiji? I also wonder about the Sabarmati Ashram at Ahmedabad keeps silence about such items still not recovered? Does any one has any information about other missing or unclaimed items of Gandhiji? It is shameful for Government of India for its unpatriotic attitude/behaviour in this episode. May God help India and save her from such shameless, selfish and corrupt politicians.

What a paradox! Gandhi’s items have been brought by a liquor baron the likes of whom have been opposed by Gandhi all his life. Remember Gandhi was for prohibition throughout India! Vijay Mallya is hell bent on making the youth of India alcoholic. He should stop making liquor if he really is patriotic!

    1. Perfect point Sanjay. If Mallya wants himself to be proved a Gandhi lover, he should first crush his liquor production factories! But I believe, it’s a FACE over a FACE!

    2. rachna says:

      I second your statement.
The person himself is a destroyer of young people. Even he had to prove that he himself is a true patriotic person by just destroying his own liqour companies,
      He had to prove himseif.
If he dos’nt, it means (according to me) he just is playing with the emotions of the people.

  7. Gaurang says:

    Whatever… is all this.
But.. I love Inida and I love Vijay mallya.

  8. Sanjay Mishra says:

First of all, how did it go out of India. We become heroes after we create a problem. If money speaks let it be. India should get back all that belongs to our FATHER OF THE NATION.

    1. Jigar Patel says:

Yeah bring the items back and do what? How is it going to help improve corruption, unemployment and poverty?

Gandhiji strictly believed in making the right use of money. What do you think is more important… to bring back those things or to spend the money where Gandhiji would have spent if he was alive?

      1. Jigar, you’re so right. Collecting such vintage things may not bring any changes. It’s more a matter of ego, i.e. to have things back where it belongs originally. And don’t you think that even if Gandhi is reborn today, would people follow him the way they did last time?

        1. Jigar Patel says:

You are absolutely right. It is about satisfying ego. And there is nothing wrong with that, only if we could respond with the same kind of ‘ego’ in bringing back other originals that belonged to India but is no more with us. I am talking about humanity, security, freedom and much more. These things can be brought back without spending money and an ultimate feeling of ego satisfaction can be achieved at the same time.

  9. AJAY DHAWAN says:

    MR.GANDHI WAS BORN 1ST OCTOBER

  10. AJAY DHAWAN says:

I AM PROUD OF SH. MOHAN DASS KARARAM CHAND GANDHI WHO WAS THE FATHER OF INDIA BANDE MATARAM BANDE MATARAM

  11. Jigar Patel says:

    Hi Devang,

So Mallya actually got these items back for the peace of mind of all Indians and/or to express his patriotic self? Comon Devang…do you really think that he should be honored by Gov’t before thousand of genuine people like Anna Hazare?

Maybe Mallya did not buy items belonged to Gandhi for the amount of money he might be forgetting in his bathroom but he may have bought few “articles” on him!

Nothing against you Devang…I like your site and interviews!

    Thanks,
    Jigar
