Two States of Mind Related with Social Service

If we take a look around us, we see many needy people. Sometimes we feel like reaching to them and help them, sometimes we really go and help them and sometimes we pass on by complaining or ignoring.

Personally, I have experienced two states of mind related with social service. They are:

1. The world is doing fine: As long as you have no experience of helping a needy person, you feel like there is nothing that needs to be done for others. In other words, you feel like the world will keep moving even without your participation in helping others. It seems that the world will take care of itself on its own. You do see the pain & misery of this world from the point of view that, things will be taken care on its own. And you move on.

2. It’s not enough: And as you start helping others, you realize the fact that, no matter how much help you can render to others, it’s not enough, it’s never enough. You don’t get the pleasure of helping two needy people, but you feel the pain of not being able to help the other two. But this mentality can be observed only if you dwell into nature helping others in real.

What’s your take on this?

    Devang,

I think you have rightly defined two very different state of mind that many of us share when it comes to social service.

Adding to your analysis, i feel that there is another state of mind that lie between the two you discussed. How about “I really want to do something for needy…someday.” I may be someone who think that i want to contribute BUT i’m currently not in a position to [for various reasons]; for example, someone who believes that the first thing they would want to do is to build a school for needy as and when they are in that position […monetarily].

This person may not be in the 1st state of mind that you described, as he/she does NOT believe that the “world is doing fine”, neither has he/she yet experienced the 2nd state–“its not enough.”

Keeping the definitions of the two states you mentioned as it is, where would you put someone with the feelings (described above)?

Tell me if I’m in the wrong direction here ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Agree, cent percent!

Comment by Latika(just below this) talks for the same thing, isn’t it? It’s so coincidental.

I agree with two state of mind related with social service as many times i feel to do every thing to help needy people and i help them but the same time i feel like this help is not enough as what about others and that make me sad. I feel like to do some thing to change their all life so no one need to beg but i always find me helpless doing so.
We always see working people very hard to feed them self n their families. Many people stay on street , road. They have nothing like house, they make food on pavement and sleep there. Whenever i see them in that i get so emotional. And then i think like one day i will be enough capable to help them out with all things.

    Thank you
